Veterans Day at The War Memorial Honors Community Heroes 

The Patriot Initiative distributes $15,000 in grant funds to non-profits serving Michigan veterans, Wins for Warriors announces a return to The War Memorial with 1000 Christmas Salutes

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI - Hundreds of veterans and active duty servicemembers will gather at The War Memorial for a Veterans Day breakfast and celebration of military service Friday, November 7, 2017. The event is one of numerous servicemember centric programs hosted by The War Memorial throughout the year.

Friday’s program includes the presentation of thank you notes handmade by local students, an uplifting service song medley, remarks from area veterans, and a short film presentation highlighting patriotic programs recently held at The War Memorial. Veterans Breakfast, and offers a space for local servicemembers to reconnect at The War Memorial for the camaraderie of a meal together. 

The breakfast program will also feature the presentation of $15,000 in grant funding to local non-profits working with Michigan veteran populations. The War Memorial’s Patriot Initiative will announce 2017 grant recipients, and three metro-Detroit non-profits - Cass Community Services, Fallen and Wounded Soldier Fund, and Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs - will each receive a $5,000 grant for high-value social impact services supporting Michigan veterans.

“The Patriot Initiative doubled down on our financial commitment this year, increasing our grant amount from $2,500 in 2016 up to $5,000 per grant this year” said Thomas Smith, Patriot Initiative Committee Co-Chairman, “These grants demonstrate our ongoing commitment to local servicemembers and first responders, and our willingness to partner with local non-profits to further amplify the difference they make in the lives of servicemembers in need.” 

The Patriot Initiative serves as a philanthropic arm of The War Memorial’s mission, honoring the legacy of our veterans and the freedoms their service provides. In addition to grants presented, The Patriot Initiative sponsors a series of events for servicemembers on The War Memorial Campus.

A holiday experience specifically for metro-Detroit military families. Together with the Wins for Warriors Foundation, The War Memorial will present festive fare, charming crafts, and visits with Santa himself. Founded by Justin Verlander, the Wins For Warriors Foundation honors those who serve and those who have served through a variety of programs and special events.
