For nine days over three weeks, The War Memorial’s lakefront grounds will be transformed into a festival of free summertime fun

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MICHIGAN — For many Metro-Detroit families, summertime means family fun on the lake — and at The War Memorial, that means SummerFest!

Presented by St. John Hospital & Medical Center, SummerFest is The War Memorial’s festival of family-friendly movies, concerts, and theatrical performances, all of which are held on the lawn of the historic Alger estate overlooking Lake St. Clair. All events are free and open to the public; SummerFest runs for three consecutive Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays beginning July 10.

The War Memorial grounds open at 6:30pm for all events; movies begin at dusk and live performances begin at 7:30pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Boaters are also welcome to experience SummerFest from the water.

“It’s a great privilege to offer SummerFest to Grosse Pointe and the neighboring areas, helping to create a season full of amazing experiences right in our backyard,” said Charles Burke, President and CEO of The War Memorial. “What a thrill to see people enjoying a concert or movie in a spirit of togetherness; that’s the backbone of a healthy community.”

Brandon Faber, Director of Community Engagement at The War Memorial, added, “From Michigan Opera Theatre to Shakespeare, or movies to jazz, this year’s SummerFest lineup has something for every member of the family. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, every concert, every movie, and every moment of live theater is completely free — it’s a fantastic way to gather as friends, neighbors, and families!”

SummerFest is supported by Presenting Sponsor St. John Hospital & Medical Center; Movies Sponsor Grosse Pointe Orthodontics; sponsors Ron and Mary Lamparter; Genesis Cadillac; Kevin Crowther Oriental Rug Imports; and Grosse Pointe Magazine. SummerFest is also sponsored in part by The Kresge Foundation.

Food trucks, including vendors such as Big Boy and Greenspace Café, will offer guests a wide variety of delicious options. Lighter concessions, including popcorn and The War Memorial’s house-made donuts will also be available for purchase. Event-goers are welcome to bring their own picnic, but no alcoholic beverages may be brought. A full cash bar complete with water, soft drinks, beer, and wine will be available at each event.

The War Memorial is located at 32 Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms. More information is available at, or by calling 313.881.7511.
