Week One: AJ Baime, Dewey Defeats Truman: The 1948 Election and the Battle for America’s Soul (October 15, 2020)

A.J. Baime

On Wednesday, April 20, bestselling author AJ Baime will return to The War Memorial to talk about his new book, White Lies: The Double Life of Walter F. White and America’s Darkest Secret – more information on that below.

AJ, however, is an old friend of The War Memorial. In fact, he helped kick-off the American Democracy Initiative in 2020 when he joined our host Ted Everingham to talk about his book, Dewey Defeats Truman: The Election of 1948 and the Battle for America’s Soul.

Dewey Defeats Truman tells the thrilling story of how Harry Truman, the “accidental President” who succeeded FDR, staged one of the greatest political comebacks of all time to win the Presidency in his own right and set a new course for America.

As his publisher described it, “In Dewey Defeats Truman, A. J. Baime sheds light on one of the most action-packed six months in American history, as Truman not only triumphs, but oversees watershed events—the passing of the Marshall plan, the acknowledgment of Israel as a new state, the careful attention to the origins of the Cold War, and the first desegregation of the military. Not only did Truman win the election, but he also succeeded in guiding his country forward at a critical time with high stakes and haunting parallels to the modern-day.”

A recording of AJ’s 2020 appearance is available at the link below and runs about an hour.
