Position Overview

Reporting to the Vice President of Engagement, the Director of Community Engagement will be responsible for leading the Community Engagement Team in the development, implementation, and management of large-scale community events, arts, cultural, and educational programming. This role is integral in extending our mission, fostering partnerships, and ensuring that The War Memorial continues to be a place for all people.

Leaning on creativity and curiosity, the successful candidate will have experience in event planning, organizing, and implementing unique programming, leading special events, community relations, marketing, and customer service.

Primary Responsibilities

  •  In collaboration with department leadership, research, select, curate, and execute high quality, inspiring special community events, patriotic celebrations, and arts, cultural and learning programs in support of Community Engagement and TWM mission and vision.

  •  Manages the day-to-day operation of the Community Engagement Department to ensure that that patrons receive quality programs and services are delivered effectively and efficiently.

  •  Lead, manage, and mentor Community Engagement staff to include hiring, scheduling, assignments, goal setting, performance review and disciplinary actions.

  •  Represent the Community Engagement Department at community convenings and liaison with partner organizations in the region. May include travel and attendance at meetings outside of typical workday hours.

  •  Directly and through others oversee the administration of educational programs: teacher contracts, online registration, payroll, attendance, surveys, patron follow up, and marketing efforts.

  •  Conduct recruitment and hiring of Community Engagement staff, qualified instructors, and contractors.

  •  Provide program analytics to support development, tracking and reporting related to annual department budget.

  •  Oversee the maintenance of internal systems as they pertain to Community Engagement, including but not limited to invoicing, event scheduling, room reservations, banquet event orders and floor plans.

  •  Collaborate with Marketing and Communications department to create effective marketing materials in print and social media in support of programs, as needed.

  •  Directly and through team, coordinate all phases of regularly published program brochures in support of seasonal/session offerings.

  •  Conduct ongoing evaluation of all programs to ensure increasing profitability of department.

  •  Participate in identification and implementation of process improvement and cost savings measures, while ensuring high quality services.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  •  Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Required Education/Experience/Characteristics

  •  Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as education, arts administration, parks and recreation, etc.

  •  Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated and successful related experience with a progression of responsibilities, preferred.

  •  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

  •  Excellent, effective written and verbal communication.

  •  Must have flexibility and willingness to work evenings and weekends, when required.

  •  Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel with skills and capacity to learn new software technologies.

  •  Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task and adapt to changing priorities.

  •  Occasional lifting required up to 25 lbs.

  •  Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending required.
