Curiouser and Curiouser: a solo show by Douglas LaFerle

Doug La Ferle won this solo show as first prize in a 2023 exhibition titled "Table Talk." Juror was Alex Trajano of the "Moth Story Hour" on NPR.

You can preview the exhibition below before visiting it in-person. The show will be open 9 am - 7 pm everyday thru July 26.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I've always been fascinated by the concept known as cabinets of curiosities, which originated in Renaissance Europe and reached the height of popularity in the sixteenth century. Often filling entire rooms, the "curiosities" were collections of unusual objects that reflected the varied interests of their owners and often served as entertainment for their visitors.

Like a cabinet of curiosities, this collection of mixed-media boxes and oil paintings is a gathering of various images and objects that intrigue me. I hope that each piece tells a story that will engage or fascinate you. With that in mind, the title of this exhibit (and one of my signature paintings) was borrowed from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The exhibit is in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association Gallery at The War Memorial through July 26.
