Surf’s Up: A Middle School Hawaiian Luau

Surf’s Up: A Middle School Hawaiian Luau

Say Aloha to the school year with a fun filled Middle School Dance!  Join us at the War Memorial on Friday May 3rd from 7-9pm.

Kids are invited to show off their best Hawaiian Shirts and Sundresses (no bathing suits please).  Awards will be given for most festive/on theme attire!

Interested in chaperoning? Your child will receive a free ticket to the dance! Please email ce@warmemorial.org if you are interested in volunteering.

As long as your child is entered as the attendee, the name on the ticket does not matter. If you are unsure if you entered your child’s name correctly, please feel free to email us at ce@warmemorial.org.

A tradition of The War Memorial dating back years upon years, our Middle School Dances have inspired countless memories. And the tradition continues with our first Middle School Dance since 2020!

How do I attend a dance?

  • Middle School Dances at The War Memorial are open to students in grades 6–8 who reside in Grosse Pointe or attend school in Grosse Pointe.

  • Purchase your ticket(s) online! If you prefer to sign-up in person, visit The War Memorial in advance of the event date. Sorry, there are no door sales at the event.

  • Please place your student's name into the Name(s) of Attendee(s) section when registering on our ticket sales site. Ticket(s) will be emailed to you; please provide a valid email address during checkout.

  • Your student may present either an e-ticket (sent via email) or a printed ticket (sent via email and printed at your home). Tickets are required for admittance.

  • Reservations for the next dance go on sale at midnight the day after the previous dance.

What do I need to get into the dance?

  • Your ticket — either a printed ticket or an e-ticket on your smartphone.

  • If your name is not on our ticket list, you will not be allowed in the dance.

What time does the dance start and finish?

  • Doors open at 6:45pm. In order to keep order and ensure the safety of all students, please do not arrive early.

  • The dance ends at exactly 9:00pm.

  • We understand that some students may need to arrive late or leave early. For the safety of all attendees, entrance to and/or dismissal from the dance at times other than the above will not be permitted without the authorization of the Youth Dance Coordinator. Please email the Community Engagement team to make arrangements.

What is the dress code?

  • The War Memorial adheres to The Grosse Pointe Public School System Dress Code. If you have any questions, please review this document. This dress code is in place to support a positive, safe, and respectful environment for all students. The Grosse Pointe Public Schools dress code allows for comfort, individuality and choice as long as such clothing and manner of dress does not interfere with and/or disrupt the educational process, endanger health and safety, or violate the student code of conduct.

  • Footwear must be worn at all times.

  • Inappropriate dress may result in dismissal from the event, though every effort will be made to avoid this situation. If this happens, parents/guardians will be notified and required to pick up their child. Parents/Guardians are responsible for their child’s attire at all times.

What happens if I can't attend the dance after I've purchased my reservation?

  • Sorry, no refunds or transfers will be given for any reason whatsoever.

  • For the safety of all students, ticket holders are not permitted to resell or give their space to someone else under any circumstances. There are no exceptions to this rule. Violation of this rule will mean that you will be denied admission to any remaining dances for the rest of the school year.

Waitlist

  • Unfortunately, since there are no refunds, there is no waitlist available.

  • Due to fire code regulations, once the capacity of The War Memorial ballroom is met, the dance will be considered sold-out and no further tickets can be sold. There are no exceptions to this rule per Michigan law.

Food, drink, and lost or stolen goods

  • No food or drink may be brought into the dance, including empty or sealed water bottles. The War Memorial provides refreshments, including water and lemonade, in the Ballroom lobby. Alcohol, tobacco, drugs, toys, games, utensils, weapons, obscene language, and disruptive behavior are not allowed. A student may be banned from attending any future dances at the discretion of the Youth Dance Coordinator, The War Memorial Community Engagement staff, and/or the Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety.

  • The War Memorial is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

  • Any illegal activities will be directed to the police officers who have been hired to attend the dances.

Parent volunteers and chaperones

  • We are currently looking for chaperones! Please email ce@warmemorial.org if you are interested in volunteering. If a parent/guardian volunteers their child’s ticket will be refunded when they check-in on the day of the dance.

  • When parents/guardians arrive at the dance, a list of duties will be given to each volunteer, and other duties may arise and will be given at the discretion of the onsite Dance Coordinator. Light snacks will be provided for all chaperones.

  • Any parent/guardian that volunteers will be required to complete a background check form that will be kept on file at The War Memorial.
