PATRIOTISM

Everything we do reflects a patriotic spirit.

Honor Rolls

Honoring those who have served is a core part of who we are and how we were founded. Our nonprofit organization is dedicated to the memory of those who have served. The plaques inside the Alger House, Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge, Veteran’s Gardens, and Patriot Gallery are just some of the areas on our campus that help us to honor, serve, and advocate for veterans.

Forever Remembered

Bronzed plaques near The War Memorial's historic grand staircase preserve the names of those Grosse Pointe residents who served — and those who gave their lives — in World War II. Smaller plaques in the entrance hall memorialize those who served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, as well as in Operation Desert Storm. Additionally, a meritorious service plaque honors those killed during peacetime.

Throughout the year, it is our privilege to offer legacy-rich programming, pillared by our Memorial Week Celebrations, September 11 Remembrance Service, and Veterans Day Breakfast. These events, and other innovative collaborations with our community partners, like Our Community Salutes and An Evening of Red, White and Blue, support veterans and their families, and provide opportunities for the community-at-large to express a patriotic spirit.

Plaque Amendment Policy

Names listed on the memorial plaques of the historic Alger House are revered. It is The War Memorial Association’s privilege to maintain the foyer as a space dedicated to honor the sacrifice and legacy of those who have served in our community. The responsibility of amending plaques is the Association’s commitment, governed by the Board of Directors and professional leadership team. Historically, criteria for placement of a name on a plaque has been inconsistent. The War Memorial is very aware of the privilege we have in honoring the sacrifice and legacy of those who have served in our community, and of the responsibility we bear, as both a member of the American Alliance of Museums and as a nationally registered historic site. Currently, we are not accepting additional names for the historic and commemorative plaques and are developing a more comprehensive policy.  *Updated December 2022
