Patriot Gallery
The hidden gem of The War Memorial
Thought Provoking Art Exhibits
With the gallery, The War Memorial has been able to partner with organizations like the Grosse pointe Artists Association, the Selfridge Military Air Museum, and the Grosse Pointe Veterans Club. To curate exhibits that are not only intriguing, but impactful as well.
The gallery also has some history in it, with a pair of sculptures situated along the wall, one being The Falconer, a metal sculpture given to The War Memorial in 1979 by Roy Chapin Jr. who was the chairman and CEO of American Motors Corporation. The Falconer, depicting a boy holding a falcon, originally sat in a position of prominence at the Chapin estate in Grosse Pointe Farms. And before you leave, make sure you say hi to Hank. The painting of Henry Chaney Jr. hangs between the outside doors to welcome guests to the gallery. Hank is the reason The War Memorial was born
The gallery's most recent exhibit, Two Views | Two Shores, opened in the fall of 2023. It featured the work of Alex Gilford, a Michigan painter, and Patrick Stieber, a photographer from Ontario.
From educational exhibits, to artwork, The Patriot Gallery is your place for quality displays and live on the creative side.
General exhibit hours for the Patriot Gallery are Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Patriot Gallery is located underneath the Ballroom of the Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial on the waterfront side. The gallery has entrances from both inside the building and from the promenade on the back lawn. It opened in May 2023 with the inaugural exhibit “The Great Crusade: Echoes of a Global Conflict,” which ran through the end of September. As you exit the gallery and make a right turn, you will find yourself in the shadow of Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge and our stunning views of Lake St. Clair.
When plans were drawn up for The Alger Center, the area where the gallery is now was to be the lobby of the Patriot Theater. The theater flooded in 2021 and is temporarily closed. Rather than the space be an empty room, The War Memorial wanted the area to be filled with exhibits and more. With a blank canvas, we were able to get creative in how we would use the space.
In addition to exhibits, the Patriot Gallery can be used as event space, corporate breakout rooms, and a small meeting area.
