Summer day camps return and offer diverse activities and education for youth at The War Memorial
Summer is almost here and students will be out of school. At The War Memorial, that means Campville USA.
Campville USA at The War Memorial is all about creating summertime memories for kids and teens. A variety of day camps are offered from June 20 to Sept. 2. Classes include Mad Science, Young Rembrandts, Bilingual Playhouse, self-defense and more. The upcoming summer camps marks the first in-person Campville at The War Memorial since 2019.
This year, fifteen camps will be offered in an 11-week span. Each camp has its own schedule, ranging from one-day to one-week engagements.
“Summer is an exciting time for kids to learn new skills, delve deeper into a passion, or just enjoy a new activity,” Leah Celebi, TWM vice president of community engagement and programming, said. “With such an assortment of programs, Campville USA has a camp that will pique kids’ interests or entice them to explore something new.”
Campville USA offers a full spectrum of activities, from arts and fashion to science and self-defense. The War Memorial’s diverse programming is sure to appeal to varied interests of children and teens throughout the summer, ensuring that no one misses out due to vacation plans.
For Inventor’s Camp, June 20-24, campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all, their mind. Children will create catapults and forts, and even construct their own working Light Sabers to take home. Inventor’s Camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon and is for ages 5-12.
Also this summer, July 11-15, Elena Victoria brings sewing and fashion to The War Memorial for youth. Children in this camp will learn how to make clothing from fashion designers in the industry. Students will work on a different garment each day, gaining a great sense of accomplishment after they see each garment come to life. There is a morning and afternoon session, intended for kids age 7-15. Victoria returns the week of Aug. 1 for jewelry making.
The week of Aug. 15, the focus will be on safety. The zombie outbreak response team camp is a survival training camp where students will learn preparation methods for the zombie apocalypse. Outdoor survival skills, safety, and navigating the wilderness while surviving the elements, will be presented in fun and creative ways. Zombie camp is from 1 to 4 p.m. for ages 6-11. Additionally this week, a self-defense and safety camp are planned. At this camp, youngsters will learn and practice real self-defense techniques on an instructor wearing a padded suit. The self-defense and safety camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon, also for those ages 6-11.
All Campville USA activities are held at The War Memorial, located at 32 Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms.
