Avid historian, former President of the Michigan Historical Commission to give book talk at War Memorial
GROSSE POINTE FARMS Jan. 15, 2025 – Soon after Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and just over a week before Black History Month begins, The War Memorial is excited to welcome award-winning author, and Civil War expert, Jack Dempsey.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, join us for a Historic Book Talk on “Warriors for Liberty,” a book authored by Dempsey and published in September. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the lecture beginning at 7 p.m. A question and answer period will follow. Dempsey will bring to light the pivotal contributions of Michigan African Americans during the Civil War, both on the battlefield and beyond.
Dempsey’s book shares stories from the heroic First Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment, to unsung civilians who fought for freedom in countless ways. These stories and more highlight the courage, resilience, and patriotism of Michiganders of African descent in one of America’s most transformative eras.
Discover the remarkable journey of William Dollarson, who escaped slavery in Natchez, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Detroit, and ultimately served alongside Michigan’s leading general in the fight against the Confederacy.
This event is free to attend, and please note that signed copies of the book, as well as two other titles penned by Mr. Dempsey, are available for purchase which can be autographed at the event. All proceeds from the sales of Dempsey's books go toward funding a State of Michigan monument on Antietam National Battlefield via the Michigan Civil War Association.
