Leading Detroit female vocalist Nicole New to perform songs about love at TWM Live at the Alger series Valentine’s Day event

Featuring noted and local favorite, pianist Cliff Monear

The War Memorial (TWM) is excited to celebrate all things love in honor of Valentine's Day with its next Live at the Alger performer Nicole New. The event will take place Sunday, February 13 at TWM’s historic Alger House.

New, one of Detroit’s leading female vocalist and band leaders, is a soulful and sensitive artist known for her creative fusion of genres. She transcends far beyond singing the standards -- she makes them her own. New's Interpretation is reminiscent of someone who understands deeply the meaning of song.

"I have a penchant for cabaret, and I really enjoy creating a multitude of emotions throughout a show,” said New. “An ebb and flow, a zig a zag and before you know it, hopefully a few people have had their hearts enchanted, distracted, or for a moment, broken. Either way I hope audiences will experience a myriad of emotions which represent the essence of us all, life.”

While New is best known for her performances at Detroit jazz venues such as The Dirty Dog Jazz Café, Cliff Bell’s, and the Steinway Jazz Café, she often travels across the country to share her music, as well. In New York City, New is often seen at venues like Small’s, Mezzrow, Terra Blues, and Lola.

Her most recent national performances with The New Mexico Philharmonic “Gershwin and Friends” and the Jackson Symphony Orchestra “Evening of Broadway.”

For this special event, New will be joined by Cliff Monear and will perform songs about love and all the glorious and not so glorious sides of it through song.

Many community members may already be familiar with Monear. Also, a force, Cliff’s jazz group, The Cliff Monear Trio, is one of the busiest performing rhythm sections in the Midwest. In addition to his very full private and public performance schedule, Monear is the exclusive Steinway & Sons representative for the Michigan jazz community.

“A lot of my creative moments happen on stage while we are playing and those are magical manifestations. I hope this concert will have plenty of these special moments,” said New.
