Scholar Series at The War Memorial kicks off Oct. 10

*The Oct. 10 Oakland University Scholars Series at The War Memorial with Professor David Dulio is rescheduled for February. Our Nov. 16 discussion with Professor Peter Trumbore is still planned

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, Oct. 3, 2022 – Campaign 2022 and U.S. foreign policy will be the focus of a new Scholar Series happening this fall at The War Memorial.

The series features a pair of professors – David Dulio and Peter Trumbore – from Oakland University in Rochester who will be speaking from the library at the historic Alger House in Grosse Pointe Farms.

Dulio’s interactive session is set for Oct. 10, with his talk beginning at 7 p.m. His remarks, in the lead up to Election Day, will be centered on “Campaign 2022: Key Dynamics that will shape the Race and Outcomes.” He will address questions like will President Joe Biden's low job approval sink the Democrats? Will former President Trump's endorsed candidates help or hurt the GOP effort to regain control of the U.S. Congress?

“One of OU's institutional goals is to be a leader in community engagement,” Dulio said. “One of the ways we can do that is by developing and fostering relationships with community partners. The relationship with The War Memorial is a natural fit given its mission and standing in the community.”

Dulio commented that at his appearance, attendees can expect an unvarnished and unbiased examination of the 2022 campaign season.

“We'll explore the key dynamics at work in both US and Michigan politics that are currently impacting the battle for power and what to look for as the last month of the campaign leads to Election Day,” he noted.

Dulio is a political science professor and director of the Center for Civic Engagement at Oakland. He teaches courses on campaigns and elections, Congress, political parties, interest groups, and other areas of American politics.

Trumbore’s discussion Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. is about American foreign policy. At the mid-point of Biden’s first term, he will look at the Biden administration's foreign policy performance.

“Biden inherited significant foreign policy challenges when he took office, from managing the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan to repairing strained relations with friends and allies,” Trumbore said. “But he's also been confronted with new problems, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the economic fallout it precipitated, and increasing tensions with China.”

Trumbore is a professor and chair of the Department of Political Science. He joined the Oakland faculty in 2002 after spending three years teaching at Clark University in Worcester, MA. His research falls into the broad categories of international conflict and conflict management, and foreign policy analysis.

Both events are free and open to the public, with registration required. To register for Dulio’s talk, visit warmemorial.org/speakers/osu-dulio2022. To sign up for Trumbore’s session, check out warmemorial.org/speakers/osu-trumbore2022.
