American Democracy Live Event | Detroit Bankruptcy

Online discussion and live Q&A featuring author and USA Today reporter Nathan Bomey

On October 14th we welcomed Nathan Bomey, author of Detroit Resurrected: To Bankruptcy and Back and a reporter for USA TODAY, to discuss the inside story of the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, what it was like to cover it for the Detroit Free Press, and the legacy of the bankruptcy seven years after its conclusion.

About Nathan Bomey

Nathan Bomey is a business reporter for USA TODAY and author of three nationally published nonfiction books, including his first, Detroit Resurrected: To Bankruptcy and Back (W.W. Norton, 2016). The book grew out of his coverage of the Detroit bankruptcy for the Detroit Free Press, where he worked for several years before joining USA TODAY in 2015. Nathan is also serving as the principal scriptwriter on a full-length documentary film about the bankruptcy. In addition to Detroit Resurrected, Nathan is also the author of Bridge Builders: Bringing People Together in a Polarized Age (Polity Press, 2021) and After the Fact: The Erosion of Truth and the Inevitable Rise of Donald Trump (2018, Prometheus Books). Nathan, who lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife, Kathryn, grew up in the Ann Arbor area and is a 2006 graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
