Week Nine: “World 101: Foreign Policy,” Council on Foreign Relations
This week we are traveling back to New York City to visit the Council on Foreign Relations
At the Council, we’ll sample “World 101,” a new series of self-paced online courses about the issues, forces and actors shaping our world. Current “World 101” courses include: “Global Era Issues,” “Regions of the World,” “How the World Works… and Sometimes Doesn’t,” “Historical Context,” and “Foreign Policy.”
With a major land war currently raging, World 101’s “Foreign Policy” course seemed a good place to start. Within that course, we’ll look more specifically at the “Tools of Foreign Policy” module. That module contains an excellent introduction to “Economic Sanctions” which can help viewers to better understand actions currently being taken by the western democracies in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Since the establishment of the Council on Foreign Relations in 1921, the organization remains true to its founding principles to “afford a continuous conference on international questions affecting the United States, by bringing together experts on statecraft, finance, industry, education, and science.” The Council functions as a think tank, membership society, and publisher. Foreign Affairs, published by the Council, is the leading publication for the serious discussion of US foreign policy and global affairs.
