This week we’re going to the home of the other Lions football team, Columbia University in the City of New York.

We’re at Columbia to sample Professor Eric Foner’s course, “The Civil War and Reconstruction.” Professor Foner, the DeWitt Clinton Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia, is one of the pre-eminent scholars on the Civil War and Reconstruction period and his course one of the most popular at this leading university. His latest book is The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Remade the Constitution (2019). To learn more about Professor Foner and his work, go to http://www.ericfoner.com/

This course is divided into three parts: “1850 – 1861: A House Divided,” “1861 – 1865: A New Birth of Freedom,” and “1865 – 1890: The Unfinished Revolution.” Lectures for “A House Divided” are available in YouTube. The link below takes you to the first lecture, the various pieces of which will play automatically if you let YouTube keep running.
