About the Instructor

Susan Smith is an experienced practitioner and instructor of Yang style tai chi, with a deep-rooted passion for Chinese culture. Her journey began during her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, where a course in Chinese philosophy ignited a lifelong interest in the subject.

Following her academic studies, Susan moved to Taipei with her husband, immersing herself in the richness of Chinese opera, the Palace Museum, and her initial experience with taiji. Upon returning to the United States, she balanced raising a family with a successful career in banking.

In 1994, Susan began her formal study of Yang style tai chi under the guidance of esteemed instructor Han Hoong Wang. She has remained a dedicated student ever since, continuously honing her skills and expanding her knowledge. Susan’s commitment to the art has led her to travel to China four times as part of the Michigan Center, where she earned the distinguished 5th rank of Silver Tiger in 2002.

In addition to her teaching roles at local community centers, Susan has served as a ranking judge in Michigan since 2000. Her expertise and dedication have made her a respected figure in the tai chi community.

Yang style tai chi has had a profound impact on Susan’s life, and she is passionate about sharing this ancient martial art with others. She looks forward to continuing her journey of learning, teaching, and deepening her understanding of tai chi.

Since 1949, The War Memorial has been committed to its original dual purpose set forth by the Alger family: to serve as a perpetual memorial to servicemen and women whose sacrifices ensure our freedoms and to provide a vibrant center for community enrichment. Today, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, revenue from ticketed events and support from our partners and donors directly contribute to continuing this mission. Together, we ensure The War Memorial remains a welcoming place to honor veterans, create lasting memories, and serve the community's well-being for generations to come.
