Spotlight on Lisa Vallee Smith:
A New Voice on The War Memorial Board

We are excited to introduce Lisa Vallee Smith, the newest member of The War Memorial Board of Directors. In a recent interview, Lisa shared her inspiration for joining the board, her leadership style, and her vision for The War Memorial’s future. With a strong background in both fundraising and marketing communications, Lisa’s experience is sure to make a significant impact on our continued mission to honor veterans and serve the community.

Inspiration for Joining the Board

Lisa’s decision to become a board member was deeply rooted in personal values and a commitment to preserving the legacy of The War Memorial. “A passion for preserving and passing along the War Memorial’s historic campus, unique programs, and veterans mission” was a key motivator for Lisa’s involvement. Additionally, her father’s service in the Korean War shaped her respect for those who have served our country, and she feels that joining The War Memorial’s Board is a way to give back to those who have protected our freedom.

Skills and Experience

Lisa brings a wealth of knowledge to the board, particularly in fundraising and marketing. With a recent history of success in raising money for multi-million-dollar campaigns, as well as 40 years of professional experience in marketing communications, Lisa is poised to make meaningful contributions to the development committee. Her expertise will be invaluable as The War Memorial continues to grow and evolve.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Lisa envisions her role on the board as one that will support The War Memorial’s long-term goals. “I plan to be a part of a team that helps ensure that The War Memorial achieves its highest maximum potential in the next five years, in alignment with the strategic plan,” Lisa shared. Her focus will be on strategic planning, advocating for the organization within her networks, and providing personal support, both financially and otherwise.

Leadership Style and Collaboration

Lisa’s leadership style is influenced by her entrepreneurial background. “Having started up and owned two businesses, my leadership style tends to be decisive and task-oriented,” she explained. While her natural inclination is to be goal-driven, she recognizes the importance of collaboration and listening. “I have to be extra vigilant to slow down and listen,” she added, ensuring that all voices are heard in the decision-making process.

Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles

Lisa has faced challenges in previous board roles and has successfully navigated them with poise. She recalled a time when a leadership succession plan for a board she chairs was threatened. “I worked with the staff to quickly create a Plan B that has since come to fruition,” Lisa shared, demonstrating her ability to remain calm under pressure and work collaboratively toward a solution.

What Lisa Loves About The War Memorial

When asked about her favorite aspects of The War Memorial, Lisa spoke fondly of several features that make the institution special. “The many tributes to veterans,” she said, “the provision of first-class waterfront space for weddings, and of course, the campus itself.” These qualities, along with the War Memorial’s mission, make it a place of deep personal meaning to Lisa.

Chairing the Development Committee

Lisa is particularly excited about her role in chairing the Development Committee. “I like to start up and recreate things,” she explained. “It’s a clean slate, and I feel that given my experience, I can share valuable insights.” Lisa’s enthusiasm for fresh ideas, combined with her background in marketing and fundraising, will help shape the future of The War Memorial’s development efforts.

Building on a Strong Foundation

As a new member of the board, Lisa is focused on continuing the momentum that has already been established. “The War Memorial has built a first-class content marketing program and

infrastructure on which to build and add reach,” she said. Lisa plans to strengthen relationships with both current and potential donors by leveraging increased donor acknowledgment, enhancing digital marketing, and expanding programs like the Moorings Legacy Society planned giving initiative.

Effective Fundraising Strategies

Drawing from her previous fundraising experience, Lisa emphasized the importance of face-to-face interactions. “Face-to-face encounters yield the highest returns without exception,” she said, noting that personal connections are key to building strong, lasting relationships with donors.

Communicating with the Community

Lisa understands the need for inclusive communication strategies that resonate with a wide range of individuals and families. “It starts with intention and not being afraid to use the term ‘diversity’ and to talk about it,” she shared. By embracing diversity in all aspects of The War Memorial’s work, Lisa believes that the organization can more effectively engage with broader community audiences.

Engaging a Broader Audience

Finally, when it comes to engaging a wider audience, Lisa sees the power of word-of-mouth and digital marketing. “Word-of-mouth is always the most effective,” she said, “and this is achieved ever more easily with digital marketing and social media.” The War Memorial is already excelling in these areas, and Lisa looks forward to building on these efforts to further expand the organization’s reach.

Looking Forward

As Lisa begins her journey as a board member at The War Memorial, we are excited to see the ways in which her expertise, leadership, and passion will contribute to the organization’s continued success. Her vision for the future, combined with her dedication to honoring veterans and supporting the community, will play a crucial role in The War Memorial’s growth in the years to come.
