After Cubism exhibition opens at DIA

After Cubism, a new exhibition, is open at the Detroit Institue of Arts.

In November 1918, just days after the declaration of Armistice and the end of World War I, artists Amédée Ozenfant and Charles-Édouard Jeanneret published their manifesto, Aprés le cubisme (After Cubism).

This exhibition from the permanent collection will explore what happened “after cubism,” primarily in prints, drawings, and photographs created in France between the years 1918 and 1948. The artistic styles ranged from ever-evolving derivations of cubism, to a renewed classicism, to surrealism, and beyond.

The exhibition runs through Jan. 7. It is free with general admission. General museum admission is free for residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

Walk For the Red: fundraiser seeks to assist firefighters

Neighbors United is once again helping firefighters fighting cancer.

Beginning Sept. 7 in Macomb Township and wrapping up Sept. 10 in Ada, the fifth annual Michigan Walk For The Red takes place. Neighbors United is a nonprofit established by Macomb Township Firefighter Joe Warne. Originally planned as a single-year event aimed at raising awareness of cancer as a leading cause of death for firefighters, the 140-mile walk has become a regular event for the organization.

The organization aims to raise $150,000 through the event to help firefighters battling cancer. Since its inception, Neighbors United has given over $315,000 to 72 Michigan firefighters and their families.
