Winter Blast in downtown Royal Oak returns this weekend!
Winter Blast Royal Oak is a free admission community event taking place Jan. 31-Feb. 2. The event features live music, free ice skating, ice sculptures, medieval village, zip line, food trucks, kids adventure zone, ninja ropes course adventure, free family activities and more.
Winter Blast will showcase live, local musicians on multiple stages throughout the weekend. Each stage will be located in a heated area, with video screens located on the outside of each tent so folks can watch the shows through out the festival.

Sole Mate Sneaker Dance
Lace up and get ready to make your mark at the most stylish event of the season! The Middle School Sole Mate Sneaker Dance is your chance to celebrate with friends, show off your moves, and, most importantly, flaunt your freshest kicks.
Set for Feb. 6, bring your A-game and compete in our Sole Mate Sneaker Contest, where prizes will be awarded for the most unique, classic, and standout sneakers. Whether you’re into vintage vibes or bold, modern designs, this is your moment to shine.

In our 213th edition of Inspired Thoughts, in The Possibilities of Oil Pastels, students will be introduced to the preferred medium of masters; and join the Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce at its annual breakfast on Jan. 30 at The War Memorial.
The Possibilities of Oil Pastels with Saveria Giovinazzo
In The Possibilities of Oil Pastels, students will be introduced to the preferred medium of masters such as Edgar Degas, Jean Francois Millet and Vincent Van Gogh and encouraged to develop their own style using the medium.
Experienced instructor Saveria Giovinazzo will introduce the tools used, and lead the class through multiple exercises and small projects encouraging them to explore the potential of oil pastels in their own work.
The materials fee will cover a set of 12 oil pastels for each student to keep as their own and the instructor will supply the tools needed for the exercises and projects. Classes are 10 am - noon on Fridays through Feb. 7.

Winter Brunch Series opens with Olivia Van Goor
Join us on Sunday as we kick off the Dave Bennett Winter Brunch and Concert Series at The War Memorial with a performance by jazz vocalist Olivia Van Goor featuring guitarist Randy Napoleon.
“Olivia is a newcomer to the series and is an amazing entertainer. I know people will love her,” Bennett says about Van Goor.

Our Hike up Mount Kilimanjaro
Artist Melissa Stieber and her husband photographer Patrick Stieber from Owen Sound, Ont., Canada hiked to the summit Mount Kilimanjaro at the border of Kenya and Tanzania. Rising from the acacia forests and scrublands at the border of Kenya and Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is 19,343 feet, making it the world’s tallest freestanding mountain.
The Jan. 12 event is the second lecture at The War Memorial as part of the Grosse Pointe Artists Association Your Old Mansion series.
You will get the details of how they prepared for the climb, hear about challenges they faced making it to the top, as well as the excitement of looking down from the summit on the sprawling savanna far below.

The festival is set for Jan. 10 through Jan. 12 for tons of medieval fun with a winter twist! All weekend enjoy oversized fires, turkey legs and an ice carving competition. Try your hand at ax throwing, or take your picture on the Iron Throne - made of ice, of course.
Frozen's Elsa and Renaissance Fair performers will be wandering the park for additional photo opportunities. The signature moment of the weekend is Fire and Ice Tower - a 7-foot ice structure that will become a giant bonfire once lit at 6 p.m. on Saturday. You don't want to miss it!

Meet Scut Farkus from ‘A Christmas Story’
You may know him as the actor who played Scut Farkus in the 1983 hit movie “A Christmas Story.” Now, it’s your chance to meet Zack Ward, the man behind the bully.
Ward will be at Sarge & Red's Toys and Collectibles in Utica on Dec. 22, from noon to 3 p.m.
The iconic red headed bully will be back in Utica to make us all “say uncle.”

Gallagher will offer an insider's account of the challenges facing Detroit and other Rust Belt cities, as well as the tensions inside local newsrooms throughout the country.

Visit Detroit later this week for a special screening of the timeless classic, Home Alone, followed by an exclusive moderated interview and audience Q&A with the one and only Macaulay Culkin. Culkin played Kevin McCallister in the 1990 film Home Alone.
Relive the iconic scenes and heartwarming moments from Home Alone on the big screen, and then dive deep into the behind-the-scenes stories and insights with Culkin himself. The 98th annual America’s Thanksgiving Parade is set to roll down Woodward Avenue!
The Parade Company is proud to celebrate Miles of Smiles with this year’s parade on Nov. 28. The star-studded celebration featuring clowns, balloons, marching bands, and, of course, those magical parade floats steps-off at Woodward Avenue and Kirby in Midtown at 8:45 a.m. and ends in downtown Detroit, past Campus Martius Park, just after noon.
The grand marshals for the 2024 parade are U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, sportscaster Mike Tirico, and Dan Loepp, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

Bedtime Stories with Santa
Dress the children in their comfiest pajamas and let them snuggle up with their favorite stuffed toy and blanket as they join Santa Claus for a magical evening in the Alger House. The children will join Santa by the warm glow of the fireplace while they listen to him read some of his beloved holiday stories, tell tales about life at the North Pole, and share his favorite holiday treat…milk and cookies!
Everyone will have an opportunity to share their wish list and snap their own photo with Santa, making for the perfect holiday evening!
Storytime seatings will take place between 4-8pm on both Sunday, December 8th and Thursday, December 12th. Each event will take approximately one hour.

The season of Holiday Homecoming kicks off Nov. 24 at The War Memorial’s Tree Lighting Ceremony, reminiscent of community celebrations long past.
The 20-foot decorated tree will be prominently placed in front of our fountain, evoking a sense of Holiday magic for any age! Your festive evening includes hot chocolate, marshmallow roasting, a vintage holiday marketplace, caroling and much more.

Art lecture set at Cranbrook Museum
In an upcoming presentation, Leung Chi Wo will explore how his practice is shaped by the narratives embedded within the materials he uses. By playing with both reason and emotion, he develops an open-ended, non-conclusive narrative that transcends traditional modes of representation.
The free lecture is planned for 6 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Cranbrook Art Museum, located at 39221 Woodward Ave. in Bloomfield Hills.
Leung Chi Wo employs a diverse range of mediums—including photography, text, found objects, performance, and installation—to merge historical exploration with conceptual inquiry. His work questions memory, power structures, and the ambiguities of history.

The second installment of Second Saturdays is upon us. We’ve got a fun Saturday morning line-up for kids and their families. Each program is just $10 per child. Adults are free and so is the coffee!
Doors open at 9 a.m. with all activities set up station style, and the onstage performance by Mad Science scheduled for 10:15 a.m.

The enchanting modern classic from Disney is ready for your Broadway Junior stars!
Frozen JR. is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production.
Grosse Pointe Theatre’s adaptation of Frozen Jr. is set for Nov. 1 and Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., with a 1 p.m. show set for Nov. 3.

Join us for Veterans Day Breakfast at The War Memorial on Monday, Nov. 11. This year’s event includes the presentation of thank-you notes handmade by local students, an uplifting service song medley, keynote remarks from retired Army Maj. Gen. Darren Werner, and a gourmet breakfast. The War Memorial is pleased to offer a space for local service-members to experience camaraderie over a meal together.

Hockey: Faster Than Ever
A new exhibit is now open at The Henry Ford.
Through Jan. 5, experience Hockey: Faster Than Ever as it takes you on an exciting journey through the evolution of ice hockey, showcasing the remarkable technical advancements and scientific breakthroughs that have shaped the sport over time. From cutting-edge technologies to the physics of play, the exhibition will leave you amazed by the fusion of science and sport.
Highlights include shooting your fastest slapshot, seeing how many targets your puck hit in 30 seconds, snapping a selfie with a real ice resurfacer, and more.
The exhibit is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is now on view through Nov. 15 in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association gallery on The War Memorial campus.
The opening and gallery talk with the juror, Michelle Boggess of Posterity Gallery, took place on Sept 28.
The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and most weekends.

Bird Walks at Ford House
Discover the beautiful birds that call Ford House home with birding expert Rosann Kovalcik from Wild Birds Unlimited Grosse Pointe.
Join Ford House for an engaging stroll through its picturesque grounds, where each outing offers the chance for a unique experience to see many birds. After the walk, unwind with a cup of coffee or tea while compiling a list of the birds found.
The walk is set for Oct. 12 and Oct. 26 beginning at 8 a.m.
This captivating birding expedition spans approximately one and a half to two hours, navigating both paved and unpaved paths. Dress appropriately for the weather, including comfortable waterproof shoes.

Whether you’re a stationery nerd, DIY Bride-to-be, or just a crafty individual, in this workshop you’ll be learning an introduction to modern calligraphy with a pointed dip pen and ink. All the basics will be covered to get you ready to add those special lettered details to your Hogwarts letters to send via owl, wedding paper goods, home decor and more! The perfect *magical* crafty night out!
Class includes 1.5 hours of instruction and demonstration from Suki Liu of Signed By Suki, a beginner’s calligraphy kit (two nibs, black ink pot, 2 letter guides, tracing paper and straight pen holder), and all materials to write on, as well as a fun souvenir or two. Fall is in full swing and with it comes a time for seasonal festivities. From hayrides and apple cider to circus acts and carnival rides, there are lots of festivals and fairs heading to metro Detroit.

Enjoy chef demonstrations and special programming as you mingle with vendors during market hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 28 and Sept. 29.
After a storied 160-plus-year history that included commerce, near-demolition and then reconstruction, the Detroit Central Market became the first historic structure added to Greenfield Village since 2000. Guests can engage with village presenters to learn more about the historic market's significance.

Family Center Community Yoga
The month of October at The Family Center kicks off with community yoga.
From 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays in October, beginning on Oct. 1, free wellness classes take place at The War Memorial.’
Breathe, stretch, and de-stress with incredible yoga instructors. Classes are free but registration is necessary because space is limited. If you RSVP and your plans change, please email The Family Center so your spot can be given to someone on the waitlist. Don’t forget your mat and water!

Celebrate Detroit Month of Design
Again this September, Detroit is celebrating its designation as a UNESCO City of Design with a month of activities highlighting the innovative and creative work of the designers and artists in the metropolitan area.
This year, the Grosse Pointe Artists Association is officially joining the celebration with two lectures.
The next lecture, Thought-Provoking Photomontages, is at 1 p.m. on Sept. 28.
Award-winning artist and GPAA member Adam Strange of London, Ontario will walk folks through the process he uses to make his thought-provoking digital photomontages. He will discuss collage and photomontage in the context of the past and present. With a nod to the Dadaists and Surrealists, Strange calls his genre “Social Surrealism.”
