America’s Thanksgiving Parade ready for Woodward

Now in its 97th edition, one of Detroit’s favorite Thanksgiving traditions, America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, returns.

The parade hits the streets of Detroit on Thursday morning with area marching bands, floats, big heads, clowns, and more.

The day kicks off with the Strategic Staffing Solutions Turkey Trot at 7:30 a.m. Registration is open through Wednesday and runs $35-$75, depending on the race. Racers are encouraged to wear their favorite holiday garb. All runners and walkers will receive an official race shirt and medal.

The parade steps off at 8:45 a.m. at Kirby and Woodward and makes its way three miles down Woodward Ave. to Congress. This year’s theme is “A Heart of History.”

Among the line-up this year are marching bands from area high schools, giant balloons like fan-favorites Captain Underpants and Kermit the Frog, clowns, big heads, floats from area businesses, and of course, Santa Claus. This year’s grand marshals are Detroit Lions' legend Lomas Brown and award-winning journalist Huel Perkins.

The parade airs live on WDIV – Local 4. from 9 a.m. to noon.
