Highland Park woman one of this year's Top 10 CNN Heroes

Shamayim "Mama Shu" Harris is on a mission to transform vacant and abandoned lots and structures into a sustainable community on Avalon Street in Highland Park. For her work, Harris is one of this year's Top 10 CNN Heroes — which recognizes everyday people improving the lives of others in extraordinary ways — and will receive a $10,000 prize.

Harris is in the running for the network's 2023 Hero of the Year award and $100,000 to support her work.

Harris is the founder and CEO of Avalon Village, a nonprofit rejuvenating a block in Highland Park by creating spaces and offering support for the community. She is among a group of honorees providing scholarships and mentorship for young adults with incarcerated parents, restoring coral reefs in the Florida Keys and connecting migrant and refugee children in shelters with educational resources.

Blake’s presents holiday extravaganza

Beginning this weekend, you can kick off holiday magic at Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill.

Tis’ the season to be jolly at Blake’s Holiday Extravaganza. The event includes shopping, festive cheer, and twinkling lights. Explore unique finds from local artisans, pick out the perfect Christmas tree, and don’t forget to take home fresh evergreen wreaths, porch pots, and delightful decor for your home.

For a truly magical experience, visit the original farmhouse for a photo with Santa, cozy igloo dining, and steaming hot beverages. The excitement peaks with Blake’s annual tree lighting in Orchard Square on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. accompanied by carolers and live music. Plus, keep the little ones entertained with free children’s crafts and face painting.

The extravaganza is set for Nov. 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Blake’s Orchard & Cider Mill is located at 17985 Armada Center Road in Armada.
