Lecture to focus on historical Detroit highway projects

The lecture Black Bottom | I-375 with Ken Colman and John Gallagher is set for 2 p.m. on March 10 at the Alger House on The War Memorial campus.

Colman works with Michigan Advance and Gallagher is a contributor at the Detroit Free Press.

The lecture will focus on Black Bottom/I-375, the case study from the 1950s and 1960s when the federal government started a grant program designed to reconnect communities affected by highway projects. Impacted areas included the Lodge going through Corktown in Detroit, I-96 devastating parts of northwest Detroit, and I-375 wiping out the historic Black Bottom.

War Memorial partners with local church for packaging effort

The need to feed is constant for one organization.

For the second year, The War Memorial is partnering with The Grosse Pointe Memorial Church to host a meal packaging event with Kids Coalition Against Hunger on Saturday, March 23.

Two shifts of packaging food will take place in the Fred M. Alger Center at The War Memorial - 10 a.m. to noon, and noon to 2 p.m.

This year’s packaging event marks the second time The War Memorial has teamed up with the church for this endeavor, the first time being last year.

“The War Memorial is proud to serve again this year as a packaging site for Kids Coalition Against Hunger,” War Memorial President and CEO Maria Miller said. “The church outgrew their space and asked if we would partner last year. We’re looking forward to seeing the community come together for this worthy cause.”

The first year the church partnered with the coalition was 2014, when 10,000 meals were packed. That number increased to 75,000 meals in 2023.
