Memorial Day at The War Memorial: DAR to dedicate special marker
GROSSE POINTE FARMS May 15, 2024 – A time-honored tradition continues at The War Memorial.
On this reverent Memorial Day, we will gather at the base of Les Brave II: At Water’s Edge sculpture, where we will pause and reflect on the selfless souls who gave everything to defend our freedoms. The gathering is set for Monday, May 27 at 10 a.m.
“On Memorial Day, we pay homage to those whose lives were sacrificed in battle and conflict. To take one day to pay tribute to those that gave so much, is the very least we can do as Americans,” Maria Miller, War Memorial President & CEO said. “We are also excited and honored that the DAR will be dedicating a historical marker on that day to be permanently placed within the beautiful Veterans Gardens on our campus.”
A feature of this year’s Memorial Day ceremony will be when The Louisa St. Clair Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Grosse Pointe will dedicate a Revolutionary War Patriots marker.
“The marker will be dedicated as we reflect on the sacrifices our veterans have made for us,” Deann Newman, treasurer of the local chapter and member of the America 250 committee, said. “Memorial Day at The War Memorial is a huge family event that has been going on for so many years. Our community is blessed to have The War Memorial do this.”
The marker will be the second of its kind in Grosse Pointe Farms- the first was dedicated at Joy Bells Park in September 2023.
“We are fortunate to have two markers approved for Grosse Pointe Farms,” Newman said. “The way our community is situated and with The War Memorial’s reputation of what they are doing to honor veterans, we thought it was time to get a second one.”
The ceremony will also include musical tributes, remarks of remembrance and honor, and a recitation of the names of Grosse Pointe residents who lost their lives in service to our country. The keynote speaker will be DAR State Regent Kelly VanWormer.
Memorial Day is part of Memorial Week at our nonprofit institution. Other Memorial Week events are An Evening of Red, White & Blue on May 22, and the 80th Anniversary of D-Day Ceremony on June 6.
