Learn about the fascinating world of birds, dogs, squirrels, giraffes, and more through enchanting stories. Special guests include Brenda Ban of Built to Thrive, Outdoor Educator Kelly Konieczki, the St. Clair Shores Public Library, and don’t miss the performance by beloved children’s musician and five-time American Library Association award winner Jim Gill.

Sept. 11 remembrance at The War Memorial

Join with family, friends, and community members as The War Memorial commemorates the 23rd anniversary of 9/11. This will be a moment where all people can come together in solemn remembrance of and solidarity against the hatred that fueled the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history.

“While this institution honors those who have served and died fighting for our freedoms, it also remembers the brave first responders and victims of the 9/11 attacks,” Maria Miller, president & CEO of The War Memorial, said.

The Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. on the lakefront lawn of the historic Alger House at The War Memorial.

The 3rd annual metro Detroit Tunnel To Towers 5K Run & Walk takes place Saturday, Sept. 7 at Lake St. Clair Metropark in Harrison Township.

Tunnel To Towers is a Foundation that supports young families of fallen & disabled firefighters, police, 1st responders & military personnel. The event begins at 9:30 a.m.

Here’s an opportunity for weekend adventure and cultural enrichment.

This docent-led experience illuminates how the Model T sparked a revolution in manufacturing and transportation, but also influenced social and cultural trends around the world. Model Ts at Twilight is set for Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Detroit.

This guided tour experience requires a reservation and includes complimentary soda, adult beverages and tea sandwiches. Tours lasting approximately 75 minutes will introduce guests to the birthplace of the Model T encompassing 20,000 square feet of exhibits and more than 65 rare antique vehicles.

Historic Base Ball in Greenfield Village

What happens when you decide to play by a different set of rules? Let’s explore a time when the game was different. When base ball was an amateur sport played town versus town for nothing more than the rush and glory of victory.

On most weekends through Sept. 2, check out some old-time baseball at Greenfield Village. First pitch is at 1:30 p.m. at Walnut Grove.

Step into a 19th-century summer — when the game was known as “base ball” — as one of the early official rule books comes to life in Greenfield Village. Join in as players parade down Main Street each Saturday before they take the field with the uniforms, equipment and umpiring used in 1867. Cheer on the action alongside live brass music and the whistle of a passing steam locomotive. Root for Greenfield Village’s two teams, the Lah-De-Dahs and the National Base Ball Club, as they take on rival clubs from across the Midwest.

Wild Summer Nights are back! Head to the Detroit Zoo to fill your summer evenings with great tunes from local artists. The next Wild Summer Night is set for July 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The evening includes a variety of music from local bands, access to explore the Zoo’s 125 acres, zookeeper talks led by Detroit Zoo animal care staff, and more.

The concert on July 24 features Enchanted Princess Party!

War Memorial Family Picnic

Get ready to spread out your picnic blankets on the lush green lawn of our center's grounds, while a DJ plays some of your favorite summer songs at The War Memorial Family Picnic.

The picnic is set for July 21, beginning at 4 p.m.

The family can enjoy a variety of yard games to partake in, a bounce house for the kids, and even take home a customized portrait by way of a caricature artist. You will be surrounded by the familiar faces and potential new friends. Either way you'll find yourself immersed in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Bringing in your own delicious picnic feast is a welcomed option as well. We will have beer, seltzers, wine, and pop available for purchase.

If you are a Veteran or Active Duty, you will have access to four free tickets for you and your guests. This is just a small way for us to say Thank You for your service.

Potions, Motions, & Slime by Kids Empowered

For this week of Campville USA at The War Memorial, lots of games, fun and role playing to handle sticky situations are in store.

Potions, Motions, & Slime is set for July 15-19 from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Kids will make slime and potions each day to learn about their superpower, mindfulness, and the art of managing emotions and frustrations. Kids will learn how to recognize when they are in a sticky situation and learn strategies to respond to unfriendly classmates, unfriendly friends, sibling conflict and everyday challenges. Each day, kids will make different colors of slimes that represent their emotions and learn ways to manage them. Please pack a nut free snack and drink/water bottle.

The camp is recommended for ages 5-10.

Music on the Plaza

Detroit Made Band, a high-energy rock & pop cover band, is next up as part of the Music on the Plaza concert series.

The free concert is July 11 at 7 p.m. at Kercheval and St. Clair avenues in Grosse Pointe.

The series concludes later in July with performances by Bandwagon on July 18, and Planet D Nonet on July 25.

SummerFest kickoff!

For many Metro-Detroit families, summertime means family fun on the lake — and at The War Memorial, that means SummerFest! Our annual summer fun series kicks off on July 10 with the Dave Bennett Band.

The free concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on the lakefront lawn.

“There are things in our show like Benny Goodman and closing with Jerry Lee Lewis, but we also have some new things and other songs that I have written,” Bennett says about the concert. “We’re trying to keep it fresh.”

Bennett is a multi-instrumentalist and singer who performs everything from jazz and swing to rock and roll. As a jazz and pop clarinet player Bennett has performed all over North American at historic venues and festivals, including Carnegie Hall. His 2018 Mack Avenue Records release "Blood Moon" reached No. 24 on the Billboard jazz charts.

The group is an energetic soulful band with expertise in many genres including funk, jazz, blues, and old-school R & B. This performance is a tribute to the Motown sound of the 1960s and 1970s including Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Jackson Five, and others.

Salute to America!

For more than 30 years, two cultural gems — The Henry Ford and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra — have joined forces to create an unforgettable concert experience over the Fourth of July holiday.

This year’s Salute to America at Greenfield Village is set for July 2-5, from 5 to 10 p.m.

Once the sun sets, the world-renowned Detroit Symphony Orchestra takes center stage for a triumphant musical performance featuring celebratory orchestral music and selections from films and American popular culture, anchored by Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," cannon fire and a brilliant fireworks finale.

The orchestra will be led by talented guest conductor Lawrence Loh, a pops programming specialist who has assisted famed American composer John Williams.

The 20th annual Grosse Pointe Historical Society Gala fundraiser takes places at a new edifice, destined to be an iconic landmark on the lake shore.

The event is set for Thursday, from 5:30-10:30 p.m. at a contemporary castle, at 663 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores.

The home anchors a family estate of custom houses. The Grosse Pointe Historical Society gala includes valet parking, open bars, hors-d'oeuvres, a strolling supper and entertainment under tents on the grounds of the estate. A preview for sponsors will feature a host-led tour of the house. A very special afterglow will benefit Gianna House Pregnancy and Parenting Residence.

32nd annual Garden Tour set at The War Memorial

The Grosse Pointe Garden Center’s next event is the 32nd annual Garden Tour on June 21 and June 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The War Memorial with the theme “Gardeners Create Community.”  

“It’s been very successful over the years,” Candy Sweeny, co-president of the Grosse Pointe Garden Center, said. “We thought that Gardeners Create Community combines gardening and reaching out to the community so that people can see how other people garden, if there are native plants incorporated or pesticide free.”   

The Center is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote education, beautification, horticulture, and conservation in our community. It has operated from The War Memorial for over 70 years and currently has over 250 members.

EyesOn Design this Father’s Day weekend

EyesOn Design car show at Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores is set for Father’s Day, June 16. This year’s theme is Design Masters: A Lifetime of Design Achievement.

This marks the 37th annual celebration of vehicle design. Thousands of car fans and over 200 vehicle owners are expected to journey to the historic home for the visual automotive feast.

“It’s a charity car show and event for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology,” Glen Durmisevich said.

Durmisevich, of Rochester Hills, is the chief judge of the car show.

Regarding the theme, Durmisevich said that previous Lifetime Design Achievement Award winners will play a large role.

“Those nominated to get that award this year are nominated only by past winners,” he explained. “Past winners also are the only ones who vote on the final winner of the Lifetime Design Achievement Award. It’s probably one of the highest forms of peer recognition in the automobile design industry.”

Former 127th Wing commander to speak at The War Memorial

Shortly after summer officially begins, The War Memorial is excited to host a book talk with a local author and former Air Force general.

On Thursday, June 27, retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Doug “Odie” Slocum will speak about his new book “Violent Positivity.” The book was released in February, published by Slocum.

The free event will begin at 6 p.m. at our nonprofit organization, located at 32 Lake Shore Drive in Grosse Pointe Farms.

“People can expect to hear leadership lessons learned over 35 years,” Slocum said. “I had some absolutely fantastic opportunities to take care of people in my career. My book is the story of how I got in the position to do that and how it all came about.”

Slocum is the former commanding general of the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Michigan Central Station to reopen

Over 35 years after it closed, Michigan Central Station in Detroit will soon reopen.

Michigan Central OPEN is a community celebration planned for June 6 – 16 to commemorate the landmark reopening of Michigan Central Station following an extensive restoration by Ford Motor Company.

On June 6, festivities kick off with Live from Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central, a 90-minute outdoor spectacular in front of The Station headlined by some of Detroit’s biggest stars. The standing room only show will feature short films, appearances by local leaders, and creators telling stories of innovation and culture from around the city and the region. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the show will begin at 8:30 p.m.

When it first opened in 1913, The Station was the world’s tallest and one of the grandest train depots in the United States. However, as preferences and technology changed in regards to travel, The Station closed in 1988 and remained vacant until Ford’s acquisition of the property in 2018. The Station has been restored to its original architectural grandeur, while retrofitting it with modern technological infrastructure to support its next chapter.

Thunderbirds to headline Selfridge Air Show

Following The War Memorial’s Air Show on June 6 as part of the 80th anniversary of D-Day Ceremony, head over to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township for another thrilling display of aerial amazement.

The U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds flight team headlines the Open House and Air Show at Selfridge on June 8-9.

Other Air Show performers include the Swamp Fox, U.S. Army Golden Knights, Misty Blues and Selfridge’s A-10 Thunderbolt II and KC-135 Stratotanker. The Thunderbirds are the Air Force’s premier demonstration flight team. Appearing at numerous air shows throughout the United States with their F-16s, the Thunderbirds make flyover appearances at the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500.

While at the Air Show, be sure to stop by the Veteran’s Zone, where The War Memorial will be setup!

D-Day 80th anniversary ceremony planned at The War Memorial

A military flyover, air show, video tribute to World War II veterans and more are planned for The War Memorial’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The ceremony is set for Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m.

GPAA presents Promising Artists Exhibition

The 8th annual Promising Artists Exhibition is currently on display at the Grosse Pointe Artists Association at The War Memorial.

This year marks the largest Promising Artists Exhibition yet, with 100 Artists from 19 metro Detroit communities. It includes work by high school students from areas like Canton, Clinton Township, Dearborn, Detroit, Eastpointe, Fraser, and the five Grosse Pointes.

Juror and artist Evan Condron drew on his years working in arts programming to sort through the almost 200 works entered by more than 100 high school art students to create the show.

The show runs thru June 7 in the Grosse Pointe Artists Association gallery on The War Memorial campus.

DAR to dedicate special marker at Memorial Day ceremony

A time-honored tradition continues at The War Memorial.

On this reverent Memorial Day, we will gather at the base of Les Braves II: At Water’s Edge sculpture, where we will pause and reflect on the selfless souls who gave everything to defend our freedoms. The gathering is set for Monday, May 27 at 10 a.m.

Nonprofit to host Veterans Gallery Show

The Veterans Gallery Show hosted by Project Brotherhood Resolve is back!

An art gallery, comedy show, sip-and-paint activity and other events will take place from May 31 to June 2 at Trader Todd’s Marina, located at 24030 E. Jefferson Ave. in St. Clair Shores.

The opening gala will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 31; sip and paint will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, and the Battle of the Branches comedy show will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on that same day.

A brunch will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, with a band to follow from 2 to 4 p.m.

The show, which The War Memorial is a sponsor of, is a way to connect with the community and let them know about Project Brotherhood Resolve.

Veteran Weekend set at Selfridge

A week before America reflects on the sacrifices made by those in the Armed Forces, Selfridge Military Air Museum will take time to salute veterans.

Veteran weekend at the Harrison Township museum is May 18 and May 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event features a glimpse into what it was like serving during various campaigns. The Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial Wall will be on exhibit as well as historic military displays and military vehicles.

In the "We've got your back" exhibition and lecture series, the Grosse Pointe Artists Association honors those on the home front.

The Michigan Military Technical and Historical Society of Eastpointe combed through its collections, combining posters and artifacts for the exhibition that will open at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at The War Memorial, along with the first of four lectures that will continue each Thursday at 6:30 through May 30.

The May 9 presentation is an overview of Detroit manufacturing focused on the war effort by Ron Lamparter. It is free, but registration is required.

Learn how to make a Butterfly Garden

What are the essential elements needed in creating a garden habitat that is both attractive and sustaining to butterflies and other pollinators? Learn about plant selections, native plants, preparation and selection of the most beneficial garden site and other important tips.

On May 2 at 7 p.m., the Grosse Pointe Garden Center presents How to Make a Butterfly Garden with John Blair at The War Memorial.

Design elements for the 2024 Trial Garden theme, “A Butterfly Garden,” will be discussed throughout the presentation.
