Community spotlight: Grosse Pointe resident to speak at 9/11 Service of Remembrance
Brian Kaufman, of Grosse Pointe, will be the featured speaker at The War Memorial’s 9/11 Service of Remembrance. The service begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11.
“I’m really taken by The War Memorial’s beauty and it’s a wonderful expression of patriotism in the community,” he said.
At the time of 9/11, Kaufman was 39 and living in Summit, New Jersey. He had an office on the 89th floor of 2 World Trade Center, also known as the South Tower. He was working as a senior vice president with Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. He began working in the World Trade Center in 1993, around the time of the first terrorist attack at the World Trade Center complex, when a bomb detonated below the North Tower.
Each year, the Kaufman family – Brian, his wife Mary Anne and their four sons – honor those who perished on 9/11.
“We tend to do so in a humble and quiet way,” he said. “Being able to share my experience at The War Memorial will hopefully be valuable to others in understanding. These aren’t just names of people on a list. They are brothers, sisters, father, sons and mothers. People don’t really comprehend the magnitude of what these people’s lives could have had.”
His remarks at the service will focus on why he wasn’t at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and speak about the people who were.

In our 139th edition of Inspired Thoughts, we go to the Detroit Institute of Arts to check out a new exhibition: After Cubism; and we “Walk For the Red” as Neighbors United once again helps firefighters fighting cancer. Neighbors United is a nonprofit established by Macomb Township Firefighter Joe Warne.
After Cubism exhibition opens at DIA
After Cubism, a new exhibition, is open at the Detroit Institue of Arts.
In November 1918, just days after the declaration of Armistice and the end of World War I, artists Amédée Ozenfant and Charles-Édouard Jeanneret published their manifesto, Aprés le cubisme (After Cubism).
This exhibition from the permanent collection will explore what happened “after cubism,” primarily in prints, drawings, and photographs created in France between the years 1918 and 1948. The artistic styles ranged from ever-evolving derivations of cubism, to a renewed classicism, to surrealism, and beyond.
The exhibition runs through Jan. 7. It is free with general admission. General museum admission is free for residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.

There will be garden docents in each garden to answer any questions you may have on a particular plant. A master gardeners table will be at one of the homes as well as an ecology table. For the second year the “Seed Library” which is at Ewald Library will have a table in one of the gardens to share their wide variety of seeds. Artists will be painting Plein Air in each of the gardens at different times throughout the tour. It is always so interesting to speak with these talented people.

This time-honored ceremony will include musical tributes, remarks of remembrance and honor, and a recitation of the names of Grosse Pointe residents who lost their lives in service to our country. The keynote address is by Col. Leah Voelker, commander of the 127th Air Refueling Group at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
